The classic definition is: orthoses protect and support the movement apparatus. The goal is to support people in their mobility. Orthoses can stabilize, immobilize, relieve or physiologically correct the body and affected limbs. Therefore, misalignments and misloads can be pre-determined, counteracted or corrected. In case of lasting impairments, they can maintain the functions and prevent or reduce pain.
